It all starts when 27-year-old architect Ted’s friend and roommate, lawyer Marshall Eriksen, gets engaged with his long-time girlfriend named Lily Aldrin, a preschool teacher, after nine years of dating each other.

At that moment, Ted comprehends that, if he wants to find true love too, he should get going. Helping him in his mission is his friend Barney Stinson, who has a gambling problem. He plays a game called Xing Hai Shi Bu Xing (Deal or No Deal), which requires Mandarin Chinese skills to play.

Soon after Marshall proposed to Lily, Ted meets the news reporter and wannabe journalist Robin Scherbatsky and he is sure that it truly is love at first sight. However, destiny might have something else in store for him, considering that Robin ended up being who his daughter and son know as their Aunt Robin. As Ted Mosby, voiced by Bob Saget, relays the story to his children through flashbacks and memories from the future, the constants are that Uncle Barney, Aunt Robin, Uncle Marshall and Aunt Lily are always involved one way or another, and have something to do with how Ted got together with their mom.
